Why you should consider a planned proposal
For some people, there’s nothing more romantic than a surprise proposal. When it goes right, this can be a wonderful memory for both people. Unfortunately, it can also go very wrong. While some people might love the idea of a surprise, a lot of people actually prefer the idea of a slightly more planned proposal. Here are a few reasons why that might be a better option.
Personality types
Different people have different personalities, which means that a sudden, surprise proposal in a public setting could be an absolute nightmare for someone who doesn’t like being blindsided. If you want to propose to someone, you should know them well enough to know what they’d prefer. If you’re not sure, just ask.
The good news is that you can actually work on a sliding scale of surprise proposals. If you’ve had the marriage conversation and know that your significant other wants to get engaged soon, but they also like a surprise, you have a lot more freedom to play with.
Otherwise, you can go for an “obvious surprise” where you tell your partner to dress up and go somewhere special, where there will be a surprise. Or you can even plan the whole thing together for a curated experience you’ll both love, along with your loved ones.
Get the perfect ring
One of the biggest upsides of planning a proposal together is that you can both find a stunning ring that the proposee will adore. This prevents the potential risk of getting a ring they don’t like or getting a ring that doesn’t properly fit their finger.
As mentioned before, if you still kind of want a surprise proposal, you can pick out and buy the ring together and then leave it up to the proposer to choose how to propose and when.
Get dressed for the occasion
Another great reason to talk about your proposal plans in advance is so that you can both have an appropriate proposal outfit. Some people don’t like the idea of going for a hike to a stunning natural area, and then being proposed to when they don’t feel as though they look their most desirable.
But if you both pick out your proposal outfits, you can look great for each other and in pictures for when you look back on the event.
Planning your photo shoot
Speaking of looking back at engagement pictures, planning your proposal also allows you to plan your proposal and engagement shoot together. You can make sure you look great without having to worry about trying to hide a photographer from your partner in a conspicuously beautiful location.
Working together
The fact is that you’re both going to have to work together to plan a wedding, so planning a smaller event like an engagement helps you to experience working together on a more manageable scale. You can get to know each other better during this process and while the stakes are lower, you can work out how to compromise and talk things through.
