The five rules of goal setting that will transform your business
Setting goals is one of the most powerful tools for success – but when done poorly it can backfire. I’ve seen it time and time again: unclear goals lead to stalled progress, overwhelming dissatisfaction, anxiety, or that lacklustre “meh” feeling. And here’s the kicker – more people get it wrong than right.
Whether it’s setting vague aspirations, lacking an emotional connection, or getting trapped in a fear-driven cycle of inaction, poorly executed goal setting will, at best, result in mediocrity and, at worst, frustration and burnout.
But here’s the good news: the opposite is also true. When you set goals the right way, they become a roadmap to success, clarity, and transformation – not just for your business, but for your life.
At the Academy for Women Entrepreneurs, everything we do is based on our success formula:
Success = (Clarity and Focus) x Momentum
We’re all about setting goals with clarity and purpose, and with strategic actions to achieve them quickly and with ease. Through our workshops, we guide women founders to build this invaluable habit and discipline into their business management.
Here are my five goal-setting rules to help you hit your targets and take your game to the next level.
1) Get to the bottom of it – The “Why?” onion
Why do you want to achieve your goal? The first answer is rarely the real reason. To truly understand your motivation, dig deeper by asking “why?” multiple times until you can’t go any further and uncover the core purpose behind it.
For example, let’s say you want to write a business book:
- Why do I want to write a book for my business? Because it will help me gain credibility.
- Why does gaining credibility matter? It increases my chances of attracting my ideal customers and convincing them more easily to buy from my business.
- What will more customers buying from me achieve? Increased revenue.
- Why do I need to increase my revenue? To enablehire a team member and expand the business.
- Why does growing my business and hiring someone matter? Because I want to build a legacy business that lasts beyond me.
Now, it’s not just about writing a book = it’s about creating a powerful tool to build a legacy. When you peel back the layers, you’ll discover a much stronger reason to stay committed.
Action step: Take a moment to write down your goal and keep asking “why?” until you reach the deepest, most personal reason behind it.
2) Make it matter
Logic might get you started, but passion keeps you going. One of the biggest mistakes people make when setting goals is focusing only on what they want and how to get there – without understanding why it truly matters to them.
Ask yourself:
- How will achieving this goal improve your life?
- What emotional, professional, or financial value does it bring?
- What will it cost you if you don’t achieve this goal?
When your goal is deeply connected to your true desires, it becomes a non-negotiable priority instead of just another task on your to-do list. I highly recommend reading The Desire Map by Danielle LaPorte – this book will help you connect with and embrace what drives you the most.
Action step: Write down your goal and list three personal reasons why it truly matters to you. Then, write down three consequences of NOT achieving it. This will fuel your motivation.
3) Kill the fear
Fear is the silent killer of big dreams. Most people don’t fail because they aren’t capable – they fail because they don’t dare to go all in (or sometimes, even try).
So, let’s tackle it. Write down every reason you believe you can’t achieve your goal, then rate each fear on a scale of 1-10 based on how real it is.
Next, flip the script: write down all the reasons why you CAN achieve this goal and post them where you’ll see them every day. Fear and success require the same energy—it’s up to you where you invest it.
Action step: Identify your three biggest fears and write them down. Then, come up with three solutions for each one to overcome them.
4) Make it real
Dreams are just dreams until you figure out how to achieve them. If your goal isn’t backed by a clear action plan, it’s just a wish.
Ask yourself:
- What needs to happen to make this goal a reality?
- What are the top three strategies that will create the most impact?
For example, if your goal is to increase sales by 50%, your top three impactful strategies might be:
- Streamlining your sales funnel
- Improving your follow-up process
- Creating a repeat customer model
Action step: Break your goal into three clear strategies and write them down. These will become your game plan for success.
5) Take action
Clarity comes from doing, not just planning. This is where the magic happens – where you turn ideas into results.
For each of your top three strategies, write down specific, actionable steps you can take immediately. Commit to starting today, even if the steps feel small. Momentum builds confidence, and confidence fuels results.
Action step: Write down three small actions you can take today that will move you closer to your goal. Then, commit to taking them.
At the core of great goal-setting is clarity, purpose, and action. When you follow these five rules, you’ll not only set better goals – you’ll also set yourself up for life-changing results.
