How to stand out in a competitive job market
In the UK, it’s becoming more difficult to get a job. There’s been a marked slowdown in the labour market, with the Office for National Statistics estimating a three-month decline of around 736,000 jobs leading up to May. This has largely been blamed on a controversial hike in National Insurance Contributions paid by employers – effectively a tax on jobs.
Whatever the cause, it’s made it more important than ever that would-be applicants distinguish themselves from the competition. But exactly how do we do that?
Craft a personal brand and digital presence
It isn’t just the content of your CV that matters, but your broader digital presence. This goes especially if you’re applying for a digital-focused position. Have a good profile on LinkedIn, and make regular, high-quality contributions there. Make sure that your website looks the part, too. You might also get in touch with an experienced and reputable recruitment specialist, whose focus aligns with your own.
Demonstrate in‑demand skills and adaptability
The skills demanded by employers are changing considerably. If you’re able to demonstrate not only a depth of skill, but a breadth of it, then you’ll demonstrate that you can be adaptable in an uncertain world. This is where having a diverse set of prior positions, and interests, can be pivotal.
Certain skills, related to the use of AI, data analysis, and communication can often be instrumental in setting you apart. Fortunately, there are many online platforms where these skills can be acquired. Above all, if you can’t get a job, make sure that you’re spending your time trying to build up your skill set through small, practical projects. That way, you’ll be able to show that you’ve been doing something with your time.
Optimise applications and leverage AI wisely
You might even use artificial intelligence to research positions on your behalf. Just make sure that you double-check your results, since AI has been known to hallucinate. AI can also be used to help identify changes to your CV and covering letters, customising them for each role. Just bear in mind that employers are now inundated with AI-created applications, and if you don’t tweak the suggestions you’re offered by your favourite Large Language Model, then you risk being indistinguishable from everyone else.
Bear in mind also that employers are using Applicant Tracking Systems to sift through their applications, and so the use of certain keywords might help you to stand apart. By contrast, if your application lacks these keywords, you might find yourself near the bottom of a very large pile!
