Four ways to help your children improve their mathematical skills

Is your child behind on their math skills? If so, know that you’re not alone. Many parents are facing the same challenges when it comes to their school-aged children.

With all of the changes happening in the school system regarding math, it hasn’t been easy for our children to grasp the concept. You might find yourself spending hours trying to find new ways to help your children understand their math homework. If nothing is working, then it’s time to dig a little deeper.

If you want to help your children improve their mathematical skills at home, here are four ideas for you to try.

1) Get them to help in the kitchen

How many times have your children come into the kitchen to bother you while you’re cooking or baking? Instead of quickly shooing them out, consider allowing them to become your kitchen helper. You might not realize it, but there are many ways that math skills are incorporated into cooking and baking.

Let your little ones help you pour the measurements or weigh out the ingredients. And let them read the recipes to you and show them how to follow each step. Counting out measurements and working out cooking times can help them get used to numbers.

2) Play math games with them

If you become a math game enthusiast, your children may well follow suit. Our children love engaging in just about anything that they see us doing, and this is especially true when it comes to playing games.

Start pulling out math board games or computer games for them to play alongside you. There are plenty of fun math activities that you can do with them to help improve their skills. There are also some amazing resources out there that provide lists of fun math activities to do.

Searching for “Kumon near me” is a sure way to find some reputable sources.

3) Read math books

If we can incorporate math skills into other skills, then we have a better chance of helping our children understand the concepts. For example, provide your children with books for them to read that have math skills within them. You can find fun math books of all types of math skills.

Try purchasing a few that focus on subtraction, addition, multiplication, division, and more!

4) Let them be your personal shopper

The last tip to help your children learn math in a fun way is to allow them to become your personal shopper. We use plenty of math skills when shopping at the grocery store and anywhere else.

Ask your children to count up the items in your cart, add prices together, and count the money at the register for payment. When they receive change back after paying for the items, ask them to count it out and understand why they got back the amount that they did.
