Your career: Six subtly effective ways to get ahead
Working hard is the single biggest factor that’ll determine how far someone will go in their career, since, well, without that it’s next to impossible to get ahead.
However, working hard isn’t the only thing you can do to get ahead. There are a bunch of other, more subtle yet just as effective, strategies that ambitious go-getters can incorporate into their professional lives, too. In this post, we’ll run through some of the best methods. Take them on board, and you’ll be much more likely to get ahead.
1) Understand your strengths
If you want to get ahead of others, then you’ll need to show that you deserve to. One way to do that is to understand and highlight your strengths. You, like everyone else, have a USP (Unique Selling Proposition).
By understanding what that is, you can pivot your approach so you know exactly what to highlight when you’re asking for a promotion or you’re interviewing for a new job. Company bosses want to know what it is that you can bring to the organization; the easiest way to tell them is to flaunt your skills.
2) Strengthen your weaknesses
With that said, while you may spend most of your time showcasing your assets, remember that there’s also value in tightening up some of your weaknesses. To do that, you’ll need to first figure out what they are. If you’re generally a self-aware person, then you might be able to do this yourself. If not, then take a look at your feedback forms or ask colleagues.
No one expects you to be great at everything you do, but if you have some obvious weaknesses, then spending a little time making them slightly stronger could do a world of good.
3) Involve yourself in the industry
The people who get ahead are nearly always the ones who are passionate about what they do. In fact, you could argue that passion is the biggest indicator of career success since passion naturally includes hard work.
How do you demonstrate passion? By going above and beyond what other workers in your industry are doing. Attending industry events, such as trade shows and networking opportunities, is a great way to position yourself on the cutting edge of all that’s happening within your industry. You really never know who you might meet by being present at these types of things — nor where they might lead in the future.
4) Improve your resume
There are some exceptionally talented individuals out there who never receive a phone call when they submit a job application. Why? Because their resume is well below standard. You might know that you’re able to do a job to a high standard, but unless your resume is up to scratch, then the people you’re applying to work for won’t know that.
If you struggle with this side of your professional life, then look at using an AI resume builder to put together a resume that lands you more interviews. In fact, it’s worth keeping your resume up to date even when you’re not looking for a new job since it’ll allow you to quickly apply for roles that interest you when they do come up.
Working with a job interview coach can also be beneficial if you usually stumble at that part of the job-hunting process.
5) Speak up
There’s always a chance that your boss will come over and offer you a promotion. But bosses are busy, and even if they like you as a worker, it might take a while before they come to the conclusion that it’s time to put you in a more senior position.
If you’re tired of waiting, then ask them directly. Provided you’ve put together a strong case for why you deserve one, you might be surprised at how far taking the initiative can take you. Of course, if your boss says no, and offers little hope that things will change in the near future, then that might be your cue to look for new employment elsewhere.
6) Consider a mentor
Working with a mentor is a vastly underrated way to get ahead in a career. Given how beneficial they can be, only a small number of people seem to seek mentors out. If you can find the right one, you’ll receive expert insights, plus a lot of their contacts, that will allow you to make the right career move at the right time. It will take time to find a mentor, and it’s important to approach one in the right way, but if you can, then it can make all the difference.
