Why window films are a stylish alternative to traditional window dressing
Windows have long been an integral part of our homes, providing a source of natural light while also acting like a picture frame, offering a view onto the world outside.
When it comes to dressing windows, people have traditionally opted for curtains, sheers, blinds or shutters, but window film is increasingly being chosen as an attractive and stylish alternative. It is also a gentle way to provide all-day privacy without sacrificing natural light.
Four advantages of using window film
For anyone deciding which route to take, here are four key advantages of using window film:
- Versatile – Window film can be used on most smooth glass surfaces around the home, from bathrooms and front doors to stairwells and garden rooms.
- Long-lasting – Window film is durable and designed to continue looking good for many years. If you decide to remove it or change the design, this can usually be done easily and without damaging the glass.
- Cost-effective – Compared to many blinds and curtains, decorative window film can be an affordable design choice, with quality options typically starting from around £35 per linear metre or around £75 for a made to measure bespoke option.
- Easy to clean – Unlike fabric dressings that can gather dust and require regular washing, window film can simply be wiped clean as part of normal window care.
Specialist solar or UV-filtering films are also available where protection from fading is required, although these are usually clear rather than decorative.
Aside from plain frosted film, there is now a wide choice of decorative films available, from geometric patterns to botanical motifs, wildlife designs, seaside scenes and stained-glass effects.
One UK-based window film company, Brume, has recently reimagined the picture window through its collaboration with the celebrated illustrator and printmaker Angela Harding. A selection of Angela’s designs, inspired by native birds and animals, has been translated onto softly frosted film to create a collection that brings a subtle sense of nature indoors while allowing light to flow through the glass.
With so much choice available, and designs that are as practical as they are decorative, it is no wonder that window film is becoming an increasingly popular interior option.
