Three reasons why eating outdoors is good for you

It’s no secret that the UK is often graced with short spells of good weather, so when the temperatures do rise, alfresco dining becomes top of the priority list.

Whether it’s a barbecue or picnic, Brits want to get their money’s worth out of their outdoor space. Alfresco dining, however, is usually associated with socialising and gathering with friends and family, which can be more challenging when outdoor space is limited to a balcony or terrace.

Despite 76% of Brits having access to private outdoor spaces, 54% struggle with size limitations when it comes to making use of this space. As a result, many of us are missing out on making the most of their outdoor spaces and are neglecting the wellness benefits which come with eating outside – even if you have a tiny balcony or a small garden.

To inspire you to make the most of eating outside, Furniture retailer MADE, has partnered with wellness experts Patience Chigodora and Giada Del Drago to share three wellbeing benefits of outdoor dining.

1) Eating outside in nature is more relaxing

Natural environments evoke feelings of relaxation and can make eating food a richer, enhanced experience. Nature can calm and ground us, which is why you often feel better after a walk, run, or spending time around plants.

Nature also helps us practise mindfulness by engaging our senses – the sounds of birds, rustling leaves and flowing water help keep us focused on the present moment. All these sensations make eating more enjoyable. They help us notice and enjoy the flavours and textures of our food even more, making mealtime a richer experience.

2) Eating outdoors can improve your mood and digestive system

Natural light boosts the production of serotonin, the chemical in your brain that makes you feel good. Enjoying a meal outdoors can also bring positive feelings and memories. Being surrounded by nature and sharing a meal with others can create a strong sense of wellbeing.

Fresh air is also important for digestion and eating outside often makes us eat slower and more mindfully. Being relaxed and surrounded by nature can also help our body make more digestive enzymes and digest our food more easily.

Nature can quickly switch our nervous system into rest and digest mode and that’s directly reflected in our gut health. Some call the gut the second brain as it’s where our natural intelligence or intuition is seated. When we are relaxed, our digestive system works better.

3) Being exposed to natural light is good for you

Two hours of natural light is the optimal time for health, however, try to start small with 15 minutes. Eating outside daily can be challenging, especially with unpredictable weather. However, aiming to eat outside a few times a week can be beneficial.

Taking short breaks for a snack or a drink outdoors can positively impact your health. Try having your tea, coffee, or juice outdoors during a walk or in your garden. Just 15 minutes of natural light daily can make a difference, with up to two hours recommended for the best results.

The exposure to natural light and nature’s calming effects can enhance your physical and mental wellbeing. From a holistic perspective, eating outside is a mindful practice that nurtures your mind, body, and soul.
