Not feeling happy in your current role? Looking for a new opportunity? Discover the best ways to change career.

Every now and again, you may feel like you are wasting your life in the career that you find yourself in. It may be because you never dreamed of doing what you are doing or that you have felt pressured to take the job out of financial need or family expectations.

This does not mean that you need to stay in it forever. A career change is something that people of all ages do all of the time. You just need to take that scary leap to make it happen. Here is just a little bit of advice if you are looking to change careers.

Finding the right job

It may be that you have no idea what you want to do. You may have a childhood dream that you are looking to pursue. This doesn’t matter because the first thing you need to do is find somewhere that is hiring for the position you want. Y

ou should check online to see who is hiring and where the jobs you want are being advertised. Many companies use sites such as The Job Post to advertise for positions. You should look into where your career opportunities are being shown so you can see the demand for positions.

Personal inventory

You should do this one before you quit your current career. It can involve doing a pros and cons list of your current job and how they are meeting and missing your job satisfaction. You may begin to notice recurring themes or events.

As well as this, you should look inward to your own innate skills and perhaps where you are not being able to use them or how you would like to use them going forward. Pick out the ones you enjoy the most and this will help you find the right career path.

Create a plan

This will help you focus all of your thoughts and give you something to strive towards. Changing your career is not easy and so there may be times when you want to give up and stay where you are. However, this is not always the answer.

A great thing to do is set yourself targets and deadlines so you have a clear idea of how you have progressed. This could be like getting an interview in the first month or opening a dialogue with an industry leader within the next week.

Brand yourself

It is important before you start applying that you brand yourself with your new intentions. You will not be able to change your career if you cannot demonstrate your passion and desire for it.

A lot of your experience may be in a completely different industry and so it is up to you to show how those experiences will help you and your potential new employer in the future.

Changing careers

This is scary, there is no doubt about it. However, this does not mean that you should not do it. Whilst there may be many pitfalls and risks, the rewards are going to be worth it. Just make sure not to rush into anything and quit your current role before you have a new one lined up.
