2) Sit in Piazza del Duomo and breathe in the millennia-old history of the city
One of Ortigia’s focal points is the Piazza del Duomo. What we now know as the Metropolitan Cathedral of the Nativity of the Most Holy Mary is in the highest part of the island of Ortigia.
It prominently incorporates the ancient Doric-style temple dedicated to the goddess Athena, Minerva to the Romans. The cathedral is certainly one of the historic sites to visit. Inside the park, the Temenite Hill divides the area into two sections: to the south, the monumental path of Neapolis; to the north, the enigmatic Latomie, ancient stone quarries and prisons.
The most representative attractions of the archaeological park are the artificial cave with exceptional acoustics, known as the Ear of Dionysius, and the Ancient Theatre. The latter is one of the largest theatres of antiquity and is still active.
