Interview with award-winning spiritual life and business coach, Joanna Hunter
Joanna Hunter is an award-winning Spiritual life and business coach, life long psychic medium, author of best selling book: Get Selfish – The Way Is Through, and the founder of the world’s largest mindset and intuition experiment, My Million Dollar Experiment.
Alongside running her successful coaching business, she is studying for a doctorate in metaphysical science – a branch of science and philosophy that seeks to understand the world beyond the physical world.
In her twenties, Joanna was a serial entrepreneur, founding a number of businesses before burning out after years of non-stop hustle. The crunch point came when she collapsed and was admitted to hospital suffering from multiple organ failure.
After she recovered she decided to actively pursue a gentler way of life and discovered her true calling in life. Today she lives in the Scottish Highlands with her husband and three children and runs a thriving multiple six-figure business serving clients across the globe.
What’s your career background?
I started my career at the age of 15 working as a crew member at McDonalds, and later worked within their marketing department. By the age of 19 I was working as a retail manager, and then stepped into entrepreneurship at the age of 23 when I opened my first designer boutique.
By the age of 26 I had become a serial entrepreneur and owned 3 designer clothing boutiques, a 65 seater cafe and bistro, a 50% partnership in a shoe shop, and even a spiritual events pop up company – I definitely had a lot on my plate.
In my early 30’s, I hit a HUGE burn out which resulted in multiple organ failure. It was at this point that I realised I needed a career change. I embraced my natural gift of mediumship, and followed my dream of being a Spiritual Life and Business Coach, which I still am today.
How did your career change after having children?
I had my first two children very young so by the age of 22, I was a mum twice over and was also newly married. Even though I had five years management experience by this stage, I remember going for job interviews feeling like I had; ‘liable to breed again’ stamped on my forehead – I was asked the most sexist questions imaginable!
This angered me so much that when my kids were just two and three, I opened my first retail store – I guess you could say it was massive fuel for the fire. My kids kept that fire burning, they really inspired me to work hard and create opportunities for myself and my young family.
Then and there I fell in love with entrepreneurship – the idea that nobody but me controlled my future is one that still lights me up today.
Where did the idea for your business come from?
For me my current business wasn’t so much as a fully formed idea like my shops had been, it was a more organic process. After my burn out the only business I kept was my spiritual events pop up company, I loved the flexibility of it and it evolved over the years.
In 2015 it went through it’s biggest evolution – I moved everything online and became a fully online business. Now we have clients in nearly every corner of the world, and our online academy has over 2500+ enrolled students.
What’s your USP?
It’s myself! You won’t find many psychic business coaches with 20+ years actual business experience as a business owner and a mentor. I also channel a collective consciousness called Skylar – the wisdom they drop my clients is legendary. My clients call me the most woo woo, but practical person you’ll ever meet.
Who’s your target audience?
I work exclusively now with spiritual or soul centered entrepreneurs – my minimum requirement to take a client on is that they have to understand the fundamentals of the Law of Attraction and are open to the idea of metaphysical spiritual concepts, otherwise I won’t work with them – I am not for muggles!
How do you spread the word about what you do?
I am an expert in organic reach, I have built my 5th 6-figure business 100% through organic reach. We are currently scaling this business to 7 figures, reaching as many people as possible through social media and my facebook group.
What’s been your most successful marketing strategy?
Self love – it literally makes you magnetic to your ideal clients, followed by honesty and integrity. These are the heart of why I make five-figures month after month. I also believe in leading with generosity – my free training offers so much value that people often tell me that they would have paid for it. People remember that.
What’s been the biggest obstacle you’ve had to overcome?
Without a doubt, it has to be healing from multiple organ failure which was the result of my earlier burn out. It was also one of my greatest spiritual teachers and it completely changed the trajectory of my life.
And your proudest moment so far?
I have had sooooo many. My clients make me beyond proud everyday. Hearing how their lives have transformed and seeing them heal in ways they never imagined is so humbling.
Other highlights include retiring my hubby from his job, bringing my eldest daughter home to work with us. Hitting our first 10K month less than a year after starting, knowing the lives we have changed as a result. Seeing some of clients reach seven-figure years knowing the insane impact they are making in the world – those days it’s awesome to be me.
Why is your work so important to you?
I believe all the world’s problems, big or small are one problem, I know that is a massively bold statement! Bear with me- we live in a world entirely composed of energy, since everything is energy, every problem we encounter is also energy and therefore it stands to simple, logical, reason that all solutions are energy too.
Energy is consciousness. I came here to Earth to teach this message, the miracles I have witnessed when others possess this knowledge and begin to raise their consciousness is awe inspiring. My work has the power to change the world. I do it for me, for you and for the planet!
Who inspires you?
One of my biggest inspirations is the late Louise L Hay founder of Hay House publishing. Oprah is another woman that greatly inspires me, both these ladies have come from huge adversity and created amazing legacy businesses that will leave an impact for generations to come.
My clients have me springing out of bed in the morning, thee restore my faith in humanity with their powerful work and messages, this truly inspires me everyday.
How do you balance your work with your family?
I have a super supportive husband, Paul, who is our family’s rock. We have been married 23 years, and we have the privilege of working together from home, which I am very grateful for. I make sure I schedule time off regularly as I believe rest is an essential part of running an effective business.
What are your three top pieces of advice for someone wanting to do something similar?
1) Understand it all begins and ends in your mind
The life you want, the relationships you desire, the money you want to make and the career you dream off all starts first as an energy inside your mind.
It becomes a reality outside of you when you can hold the vibration as your predominant one. You have to decide who you will be in this life! Then live as if it’s going to happen.
2) Self love is the key that will unlock all of your desires
Self love will heal everything and it will help you set a standard for the universe to meet you at. Your outer world is a reflection of your inner one, heal the inner one with self love and the outer one heals too.
3) Plan
Planning is self love in action. If you plan, you plan to succeed. With no plan, you are still planning, only it’s to fail. Harsh – but the truth is sometimes.
Planning is like creating an energetic container to catch your success in. No container; your success runs through your fingers and you never see it. Find exactly what it would take to create the life you desire then plan for it. See it, believe it, action it. And the universe will meet you there.
