Developing the mindset to succeed and lead

If you want to succeed right now, you need to have the right mindset; a mindset that is focused on growth, leadership, and ultimately success.

But how exactly do you develop that? It starts with self-reflection, and reading the following tips.

1) Embrace the “F” word (yep, failure)

If you want to succeed and lead, it might sound strange, but first of fall, you need to be able to fail effectively. Most of us fear failure, especially in our careers, but actually, it is one of our best teachers, and the more you are willing to fall flat on your face, the better you will be able to develop character, strength, and the skill to lead others through theory own failures and triumphs too.

So, try everything, fail hard when you fail, and learn from it all. It will build the grit you need to succeed.

2) Manage your inner narrator

You know that voice inside your head that narrates (and sometimes sabotages) your every move? It’s time to show it who’s boss. Instead of letting Negative Nancy run the show, practice reframing your self-talk.

Swap “I can’t handle these new responsibilities” for “I’m learning new skills, and that’s pretty awesome.” Eventually, your inner narrator will become your biggest cheerleader, complete with pom-poms. If you need a kickstart, consider seeking executive coaching by Dr Jodie Lowinger (yes, an actual human who can help you banish those pesky self-limiting thoughts).

3) Channel curiosity over perfection

Perfectionism is like that party guest who refuses to leave even after the music’s stopped. Leaders who obsess over perfection often miss out on innovative ideas and problem-solving approaches because they’re too busy color-coding spreadsheets.

Instead, harness curiosity. Ask questions, poke around, and don’t be afraid to propose wild solutions. Curious leaders often uncover hidden gold mines of insight and creativity – plus, they make for way better storytellers at work gatherings.

4) Delegate like a boss (or risk eternal burnout)

Ready for a quick reality check? You can’t do everything alone. It’s impossible, and also incredibly boring. Great leaders know how to empower their team by letting them contribute. Delegation doesn’t mean dumping your workload on unsuspecting coworkers; it means identifying strengths within your group, sharing responsibilities, and trusting others to do their part.

Not only will you stave off burnout, but you’ll also be grooming the next generation of leaders – because, yes, leadership is contagious (and in a good way, unlike certain viruses we’d rather not name).

5) Build a support squad

Behind every unstoppable leader is a reliable squad—people who are there to celebrate your wins, give brutally honest feedback, and occasionally drag you out for pizza when the stress is overwhelming. Mentors, friends, and professional coaches can all be part of this team.

Great leadership isn’t just about forging ahead solo; it’s about knowing when to ask for help and surrounding yourself with people who believe in your vision. With the right mix of personalities cheering you on, you’ll have the mental (and emotional) stamina to tackle any corporate dragon.

With the right mindset, you can do anything, so whatever else you do in your career, be sure to focus on that leadership mindset!
