A better you: Five simple and effective ways to improve yourself

Love to be a better, healthier, happier version of you? Here are five simple and effective ways to improve yourself.

Did you know that the self-help industry is worth about 11 billion dollars? Every day, people spend money on books, workshops, seminars, retreats, apps, and more, all in hopes of improving themselves inside and out.

And while some of this content truly is helpful, if you really want to better yourself, at some point you have to stop researching and start putting what you learn into practice.

Here are five habits that you can begin practicing today to improve yourself and your life.

1) Practice gratitude and mindfulness

One of the best things you can do to be a better person is to practice gratitude and mindfulness. It doesn’t take much – you can start with five minutes a day! Take a few minutes each day for writing in a gratitude journal, doing breathing exercises, or meditating (or all three!).

You’ll be amazed by how much better you feel by making an effort to acknowledge and appreciate what you have.

2) Improve your sleep

Many of us think of sleep as a waste of time and don’t get nearly enough of it as a result. Remember that sleep is one of the most productive things you can do for yourself in terms of improving your health and wellness.

By getting between seven and nine hours of high-quality, restful sleep, you’ll find that you have far more energy and feel better in your day to day life. You’ll be able to attack your goals like never before.

3) Cook more meals

We live in a world where junk food is just the touch of a button away. But to improve yourself, you need to be mindful of what you’re putting into your body. Instead of eating out for every meal, do what you can to cook at least once a day.

You’ll know exactly what’s going into your meal, save money, hone a new skill, improve your health, and give yourself time away from screens. With all these benefits, picking up cooking should be a no-brainer.

4) Prioritize your goals

Do you want to lose weight? Learn an instrument or a new language? Eat healthier? When was the last time you took inventory of your goals and where you are in terms of reaching them?

First, take some time to reflect on your goals and learn your how and whys for each of them. Then, plan some actionable steps to reach them and get started.

If you find that you know what you want but are unsure how to get there, find someone with a life coach certification. Life coaches are trained to help you become your best self

5) Get productive

You probably have a set time that you wake up and a time you go to sleep (and if you don’t, you should). Take your schedule a step further by setting aside half an hour or so for tackling your to-do list.

Use this time to return those emails you’ve been neglecting, do the dishes, fold the laundry, etc. Taking a few minutes a day for the tasks you don’t particularly enjoy will give you a sense of accomplishment while cutting down on that mile-long to-do list.

Use these tips to better yourself today

The best thing about positive habits is that they often have a domino effect. Taking a few steps to better yourself will lead to more and more positive changes until you’re the best version of yourself.

Self-improvement should be a lifelong journey. You can always be a little bit better than you were yesterday. But try your best not to compare yourself to others – focus on improving yourself for you and you’ll achieve much better results.
