Five of the most iconic handbags of all time
A classic, iconic handbag can elevate any outfit. More than just a bag for your possessions, a designer handbag makes a statement.
Which is why celebrities have made some of these bags their signature pieces.
If you’re looking to invest in a timeless handbag that last you for decades, here are five of history’s most iconic bags.
1) Hermés Birkin
If you watched Sex and the City, you’ll remember the Samantha coveted the Hermés Birkin bag, and even used Lucy Liu’s name to score the iconic (and extremely hard to get) bag.
The Birkin was created in 1984 and was named after British actress Jane Birkin. It’s a favorite back of celebrities like Kim Kardashian and Victoria Beckham (who is reported to own over 100 of them!) and there is constantly a “wish list” for them (like a waiting list, but there are no guarantees).
2) Hermés Kelly
Hermes bags appear on this list twice for good reason. Unlike the Birkin bag, which is only about 35 years old, the Hermes Kelly bag has been around since 1935.
Renamed for Grace Kelly, the American-born actress who became the princess of Monaco, in 1956, the Kelly bag is arguably the most coveted Hérmes bag.
Grace Kelly carried the bag everywhere and even reportedly used it to hide her pregnancy. The wish list for the Kelly bag is also endless, so don’t hold your breath if you want one any time soon.
3) Yves Saint Laurent Muse
Saint Laurent bags are known for their iconic YSL logos on their bags. The Muse is one of their most popular bags that became an instant favorite of celebrities and actresses alike. Introduced in 2006, it quickly became a sought-after YSL bag, but sadly the design has been retired.
If a Muse bag is on your wish list, you’ll have to turn to resale sites to find one.
4) Louis Vuitton Speedy
Almost everyone recognizes the iconic LV logo on wallets, handbags, and luggage. The Speedy bag was created in the 1960s in response to Audrey Hepburn’s request for a mini version of the popular Louis Vuitton Keepall bag. She wanted an everyday bag, and she got it.
Now, the Speedy is one of the most iconic and coveted Louis Vuitton bags on the market. And the good news is that you can get your hands on one… if you have the funds of course!
5) Chanel 2.55
The Chanel 2.55 is named for the month and the year it was created (February 1955). Reborn in 2005 thanks to Karl Lagerfeld, the 2.55 bag is known for the ability to switch the strap from shoulder to arm. When it debuted in 1955, it became legendary as one of the first bags that would work for both day and evening.
How will one of these iconic handbags look on your arm?
Most of these iconic handbags will cost you a pretty penny (if you can actually get one), but they’re timeless investment pieces. This is evident in the bags like the Kelly and the Chanel 2.55 that are popular half a century after their debut.
