Interview with Arbonne consultant Susan Hughes

When Susan Hughes’ job as an NHS radiographer stopped giving her the security she wanted, she did something she never thought she’d do – she became an Arbonne consultant. She tells us why it’s the perfect fit for her family.

What’s your career background?

I qualified as a diagnostic radiographer from Kings College Hospital in 1991. I worked there for one year and then went on to work at St Georges Hospital, Tooting

While I was at St Georges, I got married and became pregnant with my first child. During this time, my husband got a job in Eastbourne and just before my son was born we decided to relocate to the south coast.

Why did you decide to take a career break?

After my son was born, I decided to return to work. I got a part-time job at the Conquest Hospital in Hastings and found a lovely childminder who looks after my baby. I worked afternoons but had a daily commute of at least 45 minutes each way.

Then just a few months later, I fell pregnant with my second child and decided that the commute was too long and my salary would not cover childcare for two children so I quit my job, which was the best decision.

What happened when you decided to return to work?

Eight years later, when my youngest child reached school age, I decided to look for a part time radiography job. I needed a term time job as I had no family locally to help me with school drop off and pick- ups.

I initially got turned down for the jobs I had applied for but luckily I managed to get exactly what I wanted at my local hospital just a few months later and am now in my eleventh year here.

Why did you decide to become an Arbonne consultant?

I absolutely love my job as a radiographer. However I was looking for a shift in my life as working for the NHS no longer gave me the security that I previously had. People were demoted, made redundant and our pay was frozen!

Suddenly it seemed that I had lost control of my working life, and this is when I discovered Arbonne, a network marketing company. I can honestly say that this is something I never, ever in a million years thought I’d be involved in, mainly because I never knew anyone who was successful in this type of business. As I was totally uneducated about it I thought it was for people who couldn’t get a proper job.

But after trying the products – which absolutely blew me away – I decided to research the network marketing business model. And once I realised this was a smart way to work and I could fit it in around my radiography career, I jumped right in.

What does your average working day look like?

I am busier now than I have ever have been with Arbonne. I work with wonderful people and I have a new-found enthusiasm for work.

My routine: I wake up at 6am, do my affirmations and gratitudes and then while taking the dog for a walk or run, I listen to an audio on personal development.

I work three days a week as a radiographer, and on my two Arbonne days I meet up with new clients for a coffee or glass of wine to show them my business presentation and drop off some products for them to try. I arrange to meet up again with them a few days later.

We then have a few hours as a family, and before I go to bed I read 10 pages of a motivational book, plan my next Arbonne day, and say thank you for my family and business achievements that day.

Why do you love it?

I love everything about being a part of Arbonne. Not only are the products the best I have ever tried, giving amazing results with the purest and safest ingredients, but the people I have met along the way have changed my life.

I have had the most positive experience and Arbonne has helped me be a more positive person. This may sound odd, but before Arbonne I had become sluggish, watched too much television and had felt that I was just plodding along – Arbonne has increased my confidence and has also given me my passion back for life.

What are your favourite products?

Gosh where do I start?! I love all the Arbonne products because most of them are multi-use, but my favourites are:

  • RE9 cleanser- it contains orange oil and it smells divine and my face feels so fresh afterwards. It was the product that bowled me over in the first place.
  • I also love the RE9 serum, for a youthful glow.
  • All of the seasource detox range. These are safe to use for people who have had chemotherapy and radiotherapy, especially the 5-in-1 oil. I use this with my body lotion and it makes my skin feel really soft and smooth.
  • Primer – I had never heard of a primer before but Arbonne’s primer is one of our best selling products.
  • The CC cream – I didn’t wear much make up before this but a little goes a long way and it evens out the texture of my skin.
  • Lotus lipstick.
  • I also love the pure vibrance hair range because it makes my colour last for longer and the mousse and serum really calm my mad, curly hair.

What mistakes have you made along the way?

I have made so many mistakes! At first, I thought I could do this business by myself and thought the money would come rolling in, but you have to treat this business like a business so you must commit and be willing to work.

There is a huge support network with Arbonne, so trust in the person who introduced you, use them and let them help you and you will get huge rewards.

And what has been your greatest success so far?

Becoming a better version of ‘me’! Reassessing my life and making new goals for the future. Launching new business partners also makes you feel wonderful because you are helping them achieve their goals in life.

What advice would you give to a mum considering a return to work after a career break?

I believe that having a career break is very important to some mums, as spending time with your babies is something you will never regret. But not all mums are lucky enough to be able to take that time off.

So, decide what is important to you and your family and decide how returning to work or starting a new job or career can fit in with your family commitments. Follow your gut instincts, and if it feels right, do it! But above all, be confident in your abilities and know that you can do it.

Network marketing is the second fastest-growing industry in the UK because it is a business that you can fit in among the nooks and crannies of your life. If you think a career in network marketing is for you, my advice is to dream big!
