How not to dress like a mum – add print and metallic

We’ve already suggested how you can steer clear clear of mum fashion crimes by adding colour and interest to your look and layering and accessorising. Now stylist Karen Skagerlind shares another of her secret style weapons – print and metallic.

So whether you want to revamp your wardrobe, or just update a favourite old look to be more current and on-trend, take a leaf from Karen’s fashion book.

Add print and metallic to your look

You only need to work one key item for your outfit to get noticed for the right reasons. And as the nautical theme seems to be a recurrent trend year-on-year, these print trousers won’t be a one hit wonder.

Soften the red, white and blue colour combination with a touch of metallic – like these Kurt Geiger pointy loafers and statement necklace from Zara.

For this outfit I’ve chosen one of my own recent purchases as it’s such an easy wearable piece. This textured top from Next has a scoop neckline, flattering 3/4 length sleeves and side split hem – ideal to wear with slim trousers, skinny jeans or a pencil skirt. It’s also great value for money.

I’ve used the Next navy mac again here and added a splash of red with this practical nylon DKNY shopper bag.
