Nearly half of working women dread telling their manager they’re pregnant

Discovering you’re expecting a baby should be one of the happiest moments of your life. But for many working women, that joy is tempered with the fear of having to break the news to their manager.

A study of 1,000 women by QualitySolicitors revealed that 42% of women felt uneasy about telling their boss they were pregnant because of their possible reaction.

Even more women questioned were unclear about their maternity rights, and were concerned that even asking about their company’s policy may harm their career.

The research shows that companies need to make their policies more available to staff. As Craig Holt from QualitySolicitors says:

“In today’s economic climate, women are understandably concerned about job security. Despite strong legal regulation to assist the employer and employee, a culture of ‘don’t ask, don’t tell’ has been allowed to develop.

Women are not asking about their rights, and employers are not always communicating clearly what these rights are and where they can find them.”
