How not to dress like a mum – layer and accessorise

Looking for a quick and easy way to transform a comfortable – yet maybe just slightly dull – outfit into a look you feel great in? As stylist Karen Skagerlind reveals, the trick is to layer and accessorise.

In the past few weeks we’ve shared our test to find out if you dress like a mum (if you failed don’t worry – so did we!), and tips on how to makeover your look quickly and easily by adding colour and interest. Now Karen Skagerlind shows you how a simple trick like layering and accessorising can bring an outfit together.

Layer and accessorise your look

Most women will have a fitted white shirt in their wardrobe so I’ve chosen this key item as the foundation for this outfit. (Make sure it has a small or rounded collar and slim arms, like this M&S version, to make this layered look work.)

Layer a pop of colour over your white shirt with this pink top from Warehouse. If you are working from home and live in jeans then choose a slim boyfriend style in a paler denim, which works well with the pink.

Next add statement accessories and shoes – I love this multi-colour gem necklace from Zara and these leopard print flats from Next. For spring choose flats with a pointy toe or a cut out heel to be on-trend.

Stepping out for a meeting? Then this Next navy mac will look great with this neutral stone shopper from Warehouse, and compliment the buttons (it’s all in the smallest detail!). As they are both classic items they will fit in with the rest of your wardrobe with ease.
